About the Principal

Dan Grabauskas

Principal, Transportation Consultant

Dan Grabauskas is a seasoned executive with more than 20 years of senior-level experience in government and non-profit management. He has a long track record of improving the management of large complex organizations, turning around problem areas, improving both the customers’ experience as well as the public employees’ work experience, and generally bringing improvements to process, procedures, service delivery — making things work better.

Grabauskas served as General Manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), the nation’s 5th largest multi-modal transit system. Grabauskas also served as Secretary of Transportation for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a position with responsibility for the transportation policies, planning, management, and modal integration for the state highway department, registry of motor vehicles, aeronautics commission and the MBTA. He has also headed the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles where he was lauded for reducing wait times in registry branches and generally maximizing the use of technology to offer online rather than in line services. And he served as Director of the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation speaking out for consumer rights and working with division heads to improve regulated services delivery in such areas as banking, insurance, and energy. Most recently he served as Executive Director and CEO of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART), the nation’s newest rail transit system currently under construction.

In particular Grabauskas’ experiences in Massachusetts as Secretary of Transportation and then General Manager of the MBTA offered him experience and insights into running and improving legacy systems across the country, and the challenges to aging multimodal systems in dense urban environments. His time in Hawaii put him in the leadership role at the creation of a new transit system responsible for the design and construction of what will be the nation’s first fully-automated, driverless train which will serve the residents of Oahu and visitors to Honolulu.

Grabauskas holds a BA in political science from the College of the Holy Cross and his MBA from the Johnson School at Cornell University.
